Amie Butterworth. ADHD UK Ambassador
In my journey to become an ambassador for ADHD UK, I’ve walked a path filled with personal struggles, revelations, and ultimately, a deep sense of purpose. This isn’t just a story of becoming an advocate; it’s a reflection of my own life, marked by a late diagnosis of ADHD in my 20s—a discovery that illuminated years of confusion and challenges.
For the longest time, I mistook my constant companion, anxiety, as the sole source of my struggles. It clouded my view, making every day feel like a maze without an exit. My school years were particularly tough. I felt out of place, unable to grasp why I couldn’t keep up with my peers, especially when it seemed like I was the only one lost in a sea of faces.
But with my diagnosis came a shift in perspective. It was as if a fog had lifted, revealing a landscape of understanding and self-compassion. I began to see my experiences through a different lens, recognizing the nuances of ADHD and its diverse presentation across genders and ages. This knowledge became a beacon of hope, guiding me toward advocacy and the desire to support others like me.
This role is more than just a title to me; it’s a commitment to making a difference in the lives of individuals with ADHD. It’s about breaking down the barriers of stigma and creating a world where neurodiversity is not just recognized but celebrated. Through my advocacy, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and understanding society—one where future generations can thrive without having to fight for recognition and support.
In sharing my story, I hope to connect with others on this journey, reminding them that they are not alone. Together, as a community and with the support of organizations like ADHD UK, we can make strides toward a more accepting and compassionate world. My journey has taught me resilience, understanding, and the importance of finding one’s voice. As an ambassador, I am honored to stand with those navigating the complexities of ADHD, advocating for change every step of the way.
