Lloyd Nelson. ADHD UK Ambassador
Hello, I’m Lloyd, and I’m thrilled to join ADHD UK as an ambassador. My journey with ADHD began much later in life, at the age of 39, following a counsellor’s suggestion that I might be neurodivergent. This suggestion set off a chain of events that led to a formal diagnosis, a moment that brought me clarity and understanding.
As a child, I always felt different, a sentiment that became clear during the diagnosis process. Speaking with family and reviewing old school reports revealed a pattern of ADHD traits that had gone unnoticed for years. This realisation made me question why it had taken so long for anyone to recognise these signs. This question fuelled my overwhelming desire to support others and increase awareness of ADHD.
I am incredibly fortunate that my workplace health insurance allowed me to receive a neurodiversity diagnosis privately, swiftly bypassing the often lengthy and arduous NHS pathways. This privilege highlighted the disparities in the diagnosis process and underscored the urgency for systemic change. Despite my initial success, the journey was not without its hurdles. My request for a shared care agreement with my GP was refused, a consequence of the BMA collective action. This setback has forced me, like many others, to pursue a new diagnosis through the right-to-choose pathway to gain recognition from the NHS.
These experiences have only strengthened my resolve to advocate for change. As an ambassador for ADHD UK, I am committed to shining a light on the inadequacies of the current diagnostic process and striving to improve access to necessary support. My goal is to ensure that others do not have to face the current obstacles and delays encountered today.
Becoming an ADHD UK ambassador is a calling driven by a passion for helping others. I understand firsthand the challenges of living with ADHD and the transformative power of a diagnosis. I am dedicated to using my voice and platform to bring about positive change, raise awareness, and support those navigating their own ADHD journeys.
