Henry Shelford, CEO and Co-Founder of ADHD UK, was quoted in the article and provided background information.

The Daily Record reports that Sir Anthony Hopkins drew criticism after describing ADHD, Asperger’s and OCD as “nonsense,” prompting backlash from neurodiversity advocates and charities who said the remarks risk minimising serious conditions experienced by millions.

Henry Shelford, CEO and co-founder of ADHD UK, responded by stressing that success stories should not obscure the real struggles many face, saying:

“It is easy for those that have found their perfect spot, where their individuality and difference helps them succeed, to forget how hard it is for those that haven’t.”

He added that diagnosis is not trivial, explaining:

“A diagnosis of ADHD or Autism isn’t like a coat bought off a fast-fashion rack. Assessments require medical specialists and NHS waits are usually measured in years or even decades.”

Shelford also highlighted stark statistics about mental health risks, noting higher suicide attempts among people with ADHD and reduced life expectancy, concluding that while people with ADHD can achieve great success, “having ADHD can be extraordinarily hard and comments like this makes it harder for those struggling the most.”
