Former Scottish National Party (SNP) MP Mhairi Black has publicly disclosed her diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Black, who served as the Member of Parliament for Paisley and Renfrewshire South from 2015 to 2024, revealed that she is taking Ritalin to manage the condition. She shared that the diagnosis has provided clarity on various aspects of her life and behavior, and she hopes that discussing her experience will contribute to reducing the stigma associated with ADHD.

Black made history in 2015 by becoming the youngest MP elected to the House of Commons since the Reform Act of 1832, at the age of 20. She served as Deputy Leader of the SNP in the House of Commons from 2022 until her departure from Parliament in 2024.

Her revelation adds to the growing awareness and dialogue surrounding adult ADHD diagnoses, particularly among women, who are often underdiagnosed. Black’s openness about her condition may encourage others experiencing similar challenges to seek assessment and support.
