Laura Lacey. ADHD UK Ambassador

I am proud to be an ADHD UK Ambassador, advocating for greater awareness, support, and understanding of neurodiversity. My journey is deeply personal—I was diagnosed with ADHD and autism in my 40s, following a dyslexia diagnosis five years ago. Like many late-diagnosed individuals, I spent years masking, struggling to fit into a world that wasn’t designed for neurodivergent minds. Understanding my neurodivergence has been life-changing, fueling my passion to ensure others receive the recognition and support they need earlier in life.

We are still seeing far too many individuals, especially women, misdiagnosed with anxiety, bipolar disorder, or borderline personality disorder (BPD), rather than being properly assessed for ADHD or autism. I speak from firsthand experience—since university, I was repeatedly told I had anxiety and was prescribed medication and therapy. Later, I was given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. But the reality was that I was just a girl with an ADHD/autistic brain, misunderstood by a system that often fails neurodivergent individuals, particularly women.

As a parent to a daughter with ADHD and autism, I’ve seen firsthand the barriers that neurodivergent individuals face in education, healthcare, and daily life. This drives my commitment to advocacy, ensuring that lived experiences shape policies and societal attitudes toward neurodiversity. I am also passionate about improving mental health provision for those with ADHD, recognizing the urgent need for better support, earlier intervention, and accessible services.

In my professional life, I wear many hats that give me a unique skill set and the ability to make an impact. As a full-time Data Specialist, I understand how data and evidence can drive impactful policy changes. As a Cabinet Member for Social Services, I have the opportunity to lobby both Welsh and UK governments, ensuring neurodivergent voices are heard at decision-making levels. Additionally, as the Autism and Neurodiversity Champion for the Gwent region, I actively work to bridge the gap between policymakers and the communities affected by these issues.

Beyond advocacy, I am deeply committed to promoting inclusivity in the workplace, ensuring that neurodivergent individuals are given the support and accommodations they need to succeed. I believe that fostering a more inclusive work environment benefits everyone, harnessing diverse perspectives and talents.

My ADHD and autistic brain fuel my determination, creativity, and relentless drive for change. By working with ADHD UK, I hope to amplify the voices of those often overlooked, push for earlier diagnosis and better support systems, and create a society where neurodivergent individuals are not just accommodated but truly valued.
