Eleanor Green. ADHD UK Ambassador
At 18, standing on the precipice of adulthood and on the cusp of significant life changes, I was diagnosed with ADHD. This diagnosis arrived like a thunderclap, echoing through the complexities of my life, validating struggles that had long been part of my existence yet remained unacknowledged. The revelation came just two weeks before my A-Levels, adding another layer of intensity to an already tumultuous time as I prepared for the transition to university.
Accepting my ADHD was a journey in itself. For someone who always felt a sense of strength and confidence, grappling with this new aspect of my identity introduced a vulnerability I hadn’t experienced before. It was a daunting adjustment, reconciling the person I knew myself to be with the diagnosis I was just beginning to understand.
Now, as I train to become a Primary School teacher, living independently in a new city, I’ve embraced my ADHD not as a limitation but as an integral, empowering part of who I am. It’s a characteristic that I once thought I had to hide, but now see as a source of strength, creativity, and resilience. My journey from diagnosis to acceptance has been transformative, teaching me to view my ADHD as a unique asset rather than an obstacle.
The path hasn’t been without its challenges. Life with ADHD is a daily navigation through unexpected twists and turns. Yet, it’s this very journey that has fueled my passion for advocacy and education. I am determined to contribute to a deeper understanding of ADHD, emphasizing early identification and celebrating the distinctive talents and abilities it can bestow.
Society often frames ADHD in terms of deficits—a condition laden with hurdles and perceived limitations on success. As an ambassador for ADHD UK, I am committed to challenging these misconceptions. My goal is to highlight the extraordinary potential within those of us with ADHD. We possess a myriad of gifts and the capacity for remarkable progress, deserving of recognition and opportunities to thrive.
My message is one of hope, empowerment, and inclusivity. I aim to show that individuals with ADHD are not defined by their diagnosis but are characterized by their incredible talents, resilience, and contributions to the world. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to see ADHD not as a barrier but as a distinctive trait that, when understood and supported, can lead to a fulfilling and successful life.
