Management of blood sugar

Low of blood sugar is linked to memory and attention. We would therefore expect that for individuals with ADHD, where memory and/or attention is already an issue that the management of food energy is therefore especially important. In particular:

  • Eating low-GI (slow release) foods with the aim of having a relatively stable blood sugar level without low-sugar “crashes”
  • Using high-GI foods (fast energy release, high in sugar) to increase available glucose and aid memory and attention when needed. This can be for important projects or exams or could be at the end of the day. High-GI foods when used should be used knowingly and with the knowledge of the impact of the lowered sugar level once the high blood sugar level has passed.
