At a glance
How NHS West Yorkshire ICB compares with other areas
Each dot is one NHS area. Further right means a longer wait at the current pace.
What does "at the current pace" mean?
We divide the number of people waiting by the number of assessments the service did in the last year. It shows how long someone joining the list today could wait if nothing changes. It is an estimate, not a promise: services can speed up, and some people are seen sooner because of urgency. The NHS standard for non-urgent care is 18 weeks.

What they told us
NHS West Yorkshire ICB told us via FOI (059FOI2627, dated 29/05/2026) that 16,187 adults are waiting for an ADHD assessment: 10,220 with NHS Trusts and 5,967 with Right to Choose providers. The ICB holds assessment-volume data only for RtC providers: 7,930 adult RtC assessments in 2025/26 (flagged by the ICB as "not completely up to date and accurate" due to inconsistent provider data returns); NHS Trust assessment figures must be requested from the Trusts directly. Pathway: GP-assessed referral with choice of NHS Trusts, WYICB-accredited RtC providers, or NCA providers. IAPs: the ICB is negotiating IAPs with all RtC providers for 2026/27.

EFFECTIVE WAIT: at the 2025/26 assessment rate (434/year), the 7,056-strong list represents an effective wait of roughly 16.3 years (7,056 / 434). Per area — waiting (2 Jun 2026) / assessments 2025/26 / median wait / effective wait: Barnsley 1,380 / 88 / 137 wks / 15.7 yrs; Calderdale 1,087 / 94 / 168 wks / 11.6 yrs; Kirklees 2,218 / 162 / 97 wks / 13.7 yrs; Wakefield 2,371 / 90 / 46 wks / 26.3 yrs. Barnsley falls under NHS South Yorkshire ICB; Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield under NHS West Yorkshire ICB (Trust named in WY ICB redirect 059FOI2627). The Trust declined to describe the pathway under s.1 FOIA, pointing to its website.

FOI4132 (11 Sep 2026): 2,183 adults on the BANDS ADHD initial-assessment waiting list; 55 adults given an initial ADHD assessment in 2025/26, 'in line with our commissioned capacity'. EFFECTIVE WAIT: at the 2025/26 rate (55 per year) the 2,183-strong list represents roughly 39.7 years (2,183 / 55). Stated wait: approximately 4.5 years; the longest-waiting person has waited 4 years 38 weeks. Pathway: referral form, screening, bi-weekly referral MDT (accepted/rejected with rationale), waiting list, then three planned appointments (full psychiatric history, QB Test, structured-interview ADHD assessment); if diagnosed and wishing treatment, a further waiting list for medication initiation.
Figures from individual services come from different dates and some services cover more than one area, so they won't add up to the whole-area total.
What they told us
NHS West Yorkshire ICB told us via FOI (059FOI2627, dated 29/05/2026) that approximately 19,534 children/young people are waiting for an ADHD or dual ADHD/ASD assessment across the patch. READER NOTE: pathways and data collection vary by place - NHS Trusts: Bradford 2,266 ADHD + 1,838 dual ASD/ADHD; Kirklees 2,483 (dual pathway); Wakefield 1,085; Calderdale 457 (dual pathway); Leeds 590 dual (Leeds ADHD-only figure held by Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust, not included). Right to Choose providers: 10,815 CYP waiting (ADHD and dual figures cannot be split). RtC assessments 2025/26: 1,556 ADHD + 1,435 dual; NHS Trust assessment figures must be requested from the Trusts. Referral routes differ by place (Bradford direct, Calderdale first-point-of-contact, Kirklees SWYPFT screening, Leeds Mind Mate SPA, Wakefield via professionals).
South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
What they told us
South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust told us via FOI (ref 5719, dated 18 June 2026) that children in Calderdale and Kirklees are held on a combined neurodevelopmental (ADHD + Autism) waiting list that cannot be separated by condition. As at 2 June 2026: Calderdale 427 waiting (260 CAMHS neurodevelopmental assessments completed 2025/26, median wait 68 weeks); Kirklees 2,333 waiting (340 completed 2025/26, median wait 155 weeks) — combined 2,760 children waiting against 600 assessments. Because ADHD cannot be isolated from Autism, these figures are shown in the table but excluded from the ADHD waiting-time graph. Both areas fall under NHS West Yorkshire ICB. No children's figure was provided for Wakefield.
Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust
What they told us
FOI4132 (11 Sep 2026): latest data (January 2026) shows 1,590 children waiting for an ADHD assessment plus 1,871 waiting for a combined autism/ADHD assessment (3,461 in total; 3,987 including autism-only). 493 children given an ADHD assessment in 2025/26. EFFECTIVE WAIT (ADHD-only list): 1,590 / 493 = roughly 3.2 years. The Trust says anyone referred now would wait 5.5 years at the contracted 722 assessments a year, but activity is above contract so the longest current wait is 202 weeks. Pathway: children over 5 with ADHD traits in two settings, referral with school and family documentation, signposting while waiting, yearly telephone welfare checks, QB Test, MDT review, feedback appointment, medication waiting list where appropriate.
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust
What they told us
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust told us via FOI that they undertakes child ADHD assessments. Key figures: 460 child assessments in 2024/25; 1,005 children currently waiting.
Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust
What they told us
FOI0436IA (12 Aug 2026): the Trust says the number of children waiting and the number assessed in 2025/26 are 'not available' and suggests Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust may hold them. The service is 'only accepting priority children now'; for those priority assessments the current wait is under 6 weeks. Pathway (Leeds Children and Young People Mental Health Service neurodevelopmental assessment pathway): weekly triage meeting, waiting list, pre-assessment call, DSM-5-based neurodevelopmental assessment with developmental history, MDT panel, outcome appointment. Routine (non-priority) referrals are therefore effectively not being accepted.
Figures from individual services come from different dates and some services cover more than one area, so they won't add up to the whole-area total.
