ADHD assessment in NHS Central East ICB
Figures come from our own Freedom of Information requests. Last updated 27 July 2026.
At a glance
How NHS Central East ICB compares with other areas
Each dot is one NHS area. Further right means a longer wait at the current pace.
What does "at the current pace" mean?
We divide the number of people waiting by the number of assessments the service did in the last year. It shows how long someone joining the list today could wait if nothing changes. It is an estimate, not a promise: services can speed up, and some people are seen sooner because of urgency. The NHS standard for non-urgent care is 18 weeks.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust
What they told us
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust told us via forwarded FOI that they undertakes adult and child ADHD assessments. Key figures: 162 adult assessments in 2024/25; 7,428 adults currently waiting; 697 child assessments in 2024/25; 637 children currently waiting.
Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust
What they told us
Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust — response 20 Jul 2026, ref FOI/06196. ADULT: 983 service users awaiting ADHD diagnostic assessment across the adult community mental health service (a non-complex backlog accrued before acceptance changed, plus ~10% complex co-morbid cases). The Trust NO LONGER ACCEPTS referrals for diagnosis of non-complex service users (Service_Status flag set) and diagnoses ADHD only alongside a co-morbid severe mental illness. 141 assessed FY2025/26 — but this counts only the centralised non-complex clinic (the only figure held manually), a partial denominator against the 983 total, so no reliable effective wait is derived.
Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust
What they told us
FOI 26 FOI 319 (24 Jul 2026): 45 adults waiting; 696 adults given an ADHD assessment in 2025/26 (45 / 696 = roughly 0.1 years). The service has recently reopened to referrals (GP referrals only) and currently has no waiting list: an adult referred now would be offered an assessment within approximately one month, subject to acceptance and completed questionnaires. The Trust expects waits to rise as referrals increase but not to previous levels (this site recorded 8,139 waiting in 2023). Pathway: GP referral, screening against criteria, waiting list, pre-assessment questionnaires, assessment by a qualified clinician.
Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust
What they told us
Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust told us via FOI that they do not hold the requested ADHD assessment data, as these services are not directly provided or commissioned by their organisation.
NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICB
What they told us
NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICB told us via FOI that they commissions adult and child ADHD assessments, but did not provide Section B numerical data. They confirmed Right to Choose payments were made for adult ADHD assessments.
NHS Hertfordshire and West Essex ICB
What they told us
Hertfordshire and West Essex ICB reported via FOI that it commissions adult ADHD assessments and commissions child ADHD assessments. No numerical waiting list data was provided. Right to Choose was used for adult and child ADHD assessments.
Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust
What they told us
Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust — response 20 Jul 2026, ref FOI/06196. CHILD: 2,716 waiting; 567 assessed FY2025/26 -> derived effective wait ~4.8 years (2716/567). Currently assessing referrals received 26 August 2023 — about 151 weeks. Many children spend a further 9-12 months on the 'Step 2' screening pathway BEFORE joining the assessment list, so the true referral-to-assessment journey is longer than 151 weeks. 206 of the 567 assessments were completed in Feb-Mar 2026 using additional NON-RECURRENT (one-off) funding, so this throughput is not sustainable.
East And North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust
What they told us
FOI 26.234 (27 Jul 2026): 2,551 children listed as new patients requiring an assessment for ADHD, ASD or both - the Trust cannot say how many will be ADHD-only until first assessment. COMBINED ADHD/ASD FIGURE - not graphed. Around 600 children were given an ADHD assessment in 2025/26. Stated wait: a child referred now would be seen in July 2029 - roughly 3 years. Pathway: consultant triage, family contacted 6 to 8 weeks before the appointment to confirm an assessment is still required, questionnaire link to family and school, diagnosis at the appointment where possible, medication discussed for later commencement. Adults: the Trust does not diagnose ADHD in adults.
Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust
What they told us
EEC FOIEEC-26-0064 (Norfolk child figures confirmed 20 Jul 2026, completing the 17 Jul partial). NORFOLK sub-area: 2,411 children waiting and 332 assessed FY2025/26; Trust-stated average current wait 102 weeks. COMBINED — Norfolk offers dual assessment (autism and ADHD) to post-5-year-olds and cannot break the list down to ADHD only. Condition-combined: table/news only, NOT graphed. (Illustratively 2411/332 ~ 7.3 years.) Provider: East of England Community Health and Care NHS Trust; commissioned by NHS Central East ICB. Beds/Luton (id 1346) and Cambridgeshire (id 1347) child figures already recorded 17 Jul.
Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust
What they told us
FOI 26 FOI 319 (24 Jul 2026): 457 children waiting for an ADHD diagnosis; the Trust reports 6,298 children 'given an ADHD assessment' in 2025/26, yet a stated wait of 18 to 24 months depending on borough - the two do not reconcile (6,298 a year against 457 waiting would imply weeks, not months), so the 6,298 figure most likely counts contacts or a wider neurodevelopmental caseload and no effective wait is derived. The child pathway currently varies by borough and from August 2026 CNWL is moving to its Trust-wide SHINE integrated neurodevelopmental pathway (single front door, single waiting list, three delivery hubs across Inner London, Outer London and Milton Keynes). The SHINE slide deck states around 4,000 children were waiting in North West London and 2,000 in Milton Keynes (December 2025) with waits of 18 to 24 months depending on borough.

Where triage flags a complexity, or a prior diagnosis needs clinical review, your referral goes to a member of our clinical team first, this can add on a week or two, depending on volume.

Some ICBs also specify waiting list management arrangements or target waiting times as part of their commissioned pathway. This can influence when patients are offered appointments and means waiting times may vary between areas.
Where demand exceeds the activity commissioned by the ICB, waiting times may be longer. We also prioritise patients with complex needs and other clinical factors in line with our contractual and clinical obligations, meaning some patients may be seen sooner than others.
